We recently offered more computer science classes for kids. We know how important technology is in today’s world, and every child deserves the chance to explore it, regardless of their background. Our classes are designed to be fun, hands-on, and approachable, turning what might seem like complicated coding and tech concepts into something kids can understand and get excited about. Our skilled and experienced teachers guided the students through the classes, helping to expand their knowledge of coding.

Our teachers Chris Gholmieh, Saahir Kadri, and Aaryan Patel made sure to engage students through assisting them through their learning in order them to fully comprehend the concepts.

The recent chess tournament hosted by XFYD was a great success, bringing together dedicated players and supporters in an organized, focused environment. The tournament offered competitive sections for players in grades K-4 and 5-8, with a particularly strong showing across all categories.

In the K-4 section, Akarsh Maheshwari emerged as the 1st-place winner, followed by Joshua Pong in 2nd place and Alex Lu in 3rd. These young players demonstrated impressive skill and focus, reflecting the time and dedication they have devoted to mastering the game. The 5-8 section also saw excellent performances, with Aditi Ganesh taking 1st place, Princeton Fang in 2nd, and Vamsi Ravula in 3rd, each bringing a high level of strategic play to their matches.

The event maintained a welcoming and supportive atmosphere, where players could refuel with snacks like chips and juice throughout the day. This ensured that players remained energized and focused during their matches, creating a positive and enjoyable experience for all participants. Families and friends who came to support the players added to the community spirit of the event, rounding out a well-executed tournament that aligns with XFYD’s commitment to fostering youth engagement in chess.

From September 6th to September 20th, XFYD has been hosting chemistry classes every Friday at the Holy Artesia Church. Led by our STEM Division Director, JJ, and supported by dedicated volunteers, these sessions cover high school-level chemistry concepts.

Students explore the structure of atoms, distinguish between covalent and ionic bonds, learn about chemical reactions, and understand the pH scale. In addition to the lessons, they engage in a variety of exciting experiments, including creating invisible ink, making elephant toothpaste, producing fake snow, and mixing vinegar and baking soda.

These interactive classes not only prepare students for high school but also provide them with a wealth of knowledge and hands-on experiences that make learning chemistry enjoyable.

XFYD has proudly collaborated with numerous esteemed partners to enhance our community outreach and volunteer efforts. We have worked closely with Holy Family Catholic Church to support our various local classes, gratefully utilizing their resources to maximize our impact. Our partnership with the Presidential Volunteer Service Award (PVSA) program has enabled us to recognize and celebrate the outstanding contributions of our volunteers. Bank of America has provided us with an amazing opportunity to indulge and educate ourselves further in the world of finance through their engagement. Our ongoing collaboration with Artesia Christian Home has also allowed us to provide valuable services to their residents. Such as putting on performances for them and previously hosting bingo nights. We are also grateful for the generous sponsorships from Trader Joe’s, which have supported our events and programs multiple times, ensuring we have the resources needed to continue our mission. Through these partnerships, XFYD has been able to significantly extend its reach and effectiveness in serving the community.

Thirty students with prior experience coding in Python on Replit participated in a comprehensive and interactive coding session. They were given ample time for hands-on practice, tackling engaging challenges, and problem-solving activities, with teachers available to assist as needed. Fun coding challenges added to the excitement, with students winning chocolate prizes for their efforts. The curriculum covered essential Python topics, including functions, inputs, lists, conditionals, indices, comparators, and internet safety, providing a solid introduction to the language. The sessions were taught by Christopher Gholmieh, Saahir Kadri, Mida Chung, and Zhewei Wan. In the context of AP Computer Science, Python’s importance lies in its simplicity and readability, making it an ideal language for beginners and a powerful tool for advanced programming concepts, fostering a deep understanding of computational thinking and problem-solving.

We are currently engaging in the opportunity to further young students’ educational journey in computer science with XFYD’s computer science class. Our instructor and student board member, Sanjay Ganapathy brings the fascinating world of coding and technology to young minds, creating an engaging learning environment. From interactive programming exercises to hands-on projects, XFYD’s CS class inspires creativity and critical thinking in students. With a curriculum designed to spark curiosity and nurture a passion for STEM, our class paves the way for future innovators.

This decision to expand into the realms of technology and the informational sciences begins with 6th-grade students at Gonsalves Elementary. Our Director of Technology and Correspondence Officer, Sanjay Ganapathy, has started teaching computer science. In the classroom, young minds are immersed in coding challenges, creative projects, and the foundational principles of programming. According to Sanjay, “Witnessing the curiosity and enthusiasm these students bring to each lesson is truly inspiring.” The CS class is not just about learning code; it’s about cultivating a community of innovative thinkers and problem solvers.

We are eager to also announce the launch of our exciting Debate Classes via our Fullerton Chapter! Debate Classes offer a unique opportunity to develop Critical Thinking by honing your ability to analyze information critically and form well-reasoned arguments, enhance communication skills to improve your public speaking, persuasion, and articulation abilities, expand your knowledge by diving into diverse topics, and broaden your understanding of various issues, as well as boost your confidence through overcoming the fear of speaking in public and build confidence in expressing your ideas. These classes are currently taught by Miya Zhu and Milin Zhu, Fullerton Chapter’s student board members. Below is a graphic containing more information on the debate classes being held.

This chapter was founded by Austin Huang, who had previously taught Chess with XFYD. We congratulate him and the rest of the Fullerton student board on officially becoming a chapter of XFYD. Their student board plans to hold various classes to aid students’ different interests and hobbies. Of which include art, music, and chess classes. Each class provides students with different learning opportunities. The implementation of sports practices and tutoring is also up for discussion in this new chapter!
