XFYD Tutoring at Melbourne Elementary School

From January 28th to April 1st, XFYD partnered with Melbourne Elementary School to support Ms. Leon’s after-school tutoring program. Every Tuesday and Wednesday from 3:40 PM to 4:30 PM, our volunteers worked with a group of about 10 students, helping them strengthen their academic skills in a focused and supportive environment.

Throughout the program, our high school tutors offered help with reading, writing, and math—providing personalized guidance and encouragement along the way. From tackling tricky math problems to boosting writing confidence, our goal was to make learning approachable and fun.

Beyond academics, our volunteers built genuine connections with students, creating an uplifting space full of curiosity, collaboration, and growth. We’re proud to have contributed to a program where students felt supported and excited to learn.

A huge thank you to Ms. Leon for running such a meaningful program and to all our amazing XFYD volunteers for their dedication and energy. Check out a few moments from our tutoring sessions below!

Flor Flores: Flor Flores is a seasoned banking professional with 15 years of experience at Bank of America. This individual’s career trajectory showcases a commitment to growth, having progressed from a teller position to the current role as a Senior Banker. Recently transferred to the Whittier, CA branch, Flor brings a wealth of knowledge from a previous position in Bellflower, CA. This banker specializes in the Better Money Habits program, with a focus on guiding clients toward achieving financial independence.

Rocio Arias: Rocio Arias is a versatile banking professional who has been with Bank of America since 1999. Throughout this career, Rocio has excelled in various roles, including Customer Service Representative, Merchant Teller Representative, and currently serves as a Relationship Banker. Rocio holds an Officer Title and is a recent graduate of both the Master Leadership Academy and the Spanish In Role Development program (2023). As the Financial Center Spirit Champion, this individual demonstrates exceptional leadership and dedication to fostering a positive work environment.

XFYD International Impact: China

Maximo Zhang, the president of XFYD traveled to the People’s Republic of China. At the country, Max gave a presentation to over three hundred people.

His speech is about community impact, and the importance of community. He talks about the importance of XFYD to his life, and explains to the students about his personal journey. The speech encompassed his schedule, daily life, and education as well.

He visits both universities and elementary schools as well as filming short trendy videos with the elementary schoolers.

“It’s was a lot of fun, especially the students questions, as they were my age. I was expecting a lot of educational questions, or questions about XFYD, but they liked to ask about my favorite video games and whatnot.” – Maximo

XFYD: Free Online Spring Chess Class

XFYD is announcing a brand new Online Chess Class!

With more teachers and a new and enhanced curriculum, XFYD is excited to to open registration to students of all skill and age levels for Chess.

Our new curriculum will take intermediate and advanced students through the Ruy Lopez, the Italian Game, French Defense, Sicilian Dragon, and many more advanced tactics to help students defeat opponents at a higher skill level.

Our beginner curriculum, through its education of piece movements, rules, and tactics and strategy, will establish a solid foundation in chess and give students room to develop their skills, even for those who have no prior chess experience.

The class will be led by Benjamin Tang and Darsh Maheshwari.

Cost: Free

When: 7:30-8:30 PM, Mondays for 6 weeks, 2/26, 3/4, 3/11, 3/18, 3/25, 4/1

XFYD: Plastic Bottle Recycling

XFYD concluded its water bottle drive!

Bringing together the community, we have gathered hundreds of plastic bottles, glass bottles, and cans. Environmentally conscious, we will recycle this plastic at a local recycling center.

California recently passed a law requiring all supermarkets, such as Ralphs supermarkets, to construct a plastic bottle recycling center within a 2-mile radius. We were shocked to discover that, as of now, residents in our local area and not even Ralphs employees were aware of this development and the ease by which they can contribute to the climate solution.

Our climate advocacy aims to make people cognizant of their carbon footprint and the ease of achieving a more sustainable lifestyle. We hope to spread awareness of the easy and efficient plastic bottling recycling centers near the very location they’re shopping at, and we hope people will take small steps to drastically reduce their carbon emissions.

Newly-Formed Fullerton Chapter of XFYD

We are thrilled to announce the establishment of a new chapter for XFYD in Fullerton! This marks a significant milestone in our mission to provide a secure environment for future generations to experience growth and the desire to constantly strive for excellence, through volunteering and contributions to their community. With the opening of this new chapter, we couldn’t be more grateful for the support we’ve received from this vibrant community.

We are eager to also announce the launch of our exciting Debate Classes via our Fullerton Chapter! Debate Classes offer a unique opportunity to develop Critical Thinking by honing your ability to analyze information critically and form well-reasoned arguments, enhance communication skills to improve your public speaking, persuasion, and articulation abilities, expand your knowledge by diving into diverse topics, and broaden your understanding of various issues, as well as boost your confidence through overcoming the fear of speaking in public and build confidence in expressing your ideas. These classes are currently taught by Miya Zhu and Milin Zhu, Fullerton Chapter’s student board members. Below is a graphic containing more information on the debate classes being held.

This chapter was founded by Austin Huang, who had previously taught Chess with XFYD. We congratulate him and the rest of the Fullerton student board on officially becoming a chapter of XFYD. Their student board plans to hold various classes to aid students’ different interests and hobbies. Of which include art, music, and chess classes. Each class provides students with different learning opportunities. The implementation of sports practices and tutoring is also up for discussion in this new chapter!

Dear All,

XFYD is now opening their second chess tournament, by popular request from students from our Wittman Classes and online Chess Classes!

The registration is now officially open! participants will have the chance to showcase their skills and claim the title of the ultimate chess champion, as well as trophies for the top 3 finishers in each age group. Our tournament is bigger and better than before, and a big thanks to Trader Joe’s for their donations!

What: A fun local chess tournament for kids of all ages!

How will the tournament work?

The tournament will consist of 5, 30 minute rounds to decide a final winner.

This competition is not USCF rated and is casual. There will be two groups, K-3, and 3-6.

Additional information such as parking will be sent out once signups are filled.

Who will be there?

All of our XFYD Student board and Chess Division will be there to celebrate our year. Also, past chess teachers will be there to help supervise, so it is a good opportunity to meet some past teachers.

How can I know if this tournament is worth my time and effort?

Here at XFYD we prioritize your child’s growth, and through this Chess Tournament, your child can gain newfound confidence and competitive experience to help them succeed in life. Also, we are bringing many acclaimed chess experts, so there will be chances for you and your child to break into the world of chess here at this tournament.

While not USCF rated, there will be awards for the participants, and of these include trophies, medals, certificates, chocolates, and more to make sure the participant feels like a champion. There will be volunteers around to help serve snacks, and to regulate the tournament to make sure it runs well.

As for the 15 dollar fee, we ask for this as a donation to the organization so we can run a better and smoother tournament. This money also allows us to run more free events in the future, providing opportunity to everyone. It is also used to supply the location and food to make the chess tournament worth going. XFYD Chess Tournament/Celebration Results

Recently, we held our first ever XFYD Chess Tournament.

The chess pieces have been gracefully maneuvered, minds sharpened, and strategies tested at the exhilarating chess tournament held on August 26, 2023, from 2 to 5 PM at 12230 Cedarcrest Dr, Cerritos. Bringing together kids of all ages, this engaging event showcased the brilliance of young minds on the checkered board. The participants, who had eagerly registered by the deadline of August 21, 2023, either via Zelle or at the door, exhibited impressive skill and enthusiasm throughout the tournament. As the final matches were played and the sun set, it was clear that the tournament not only fostered a love for chess but also a sense of camaraderie and friendly competition among the young participants.

A message from the hosts: I would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all the incredible participants who made our recent chess tournament an unforgettable experience. Your dedication, sportsmanship, and passion for the game were truly inspiring to witness.
