On April 4th, 2025, XFYD had the incredible opportunity to participate in the Niemes Environmental Science Night, where we engaged with over 700 enthusiastic members of the local community. Through hands-on learning and interactive demonstrations, we ignited curiosity in STEM and sustainability, distributing more than 300 science kits to children and families eager to explore the wonders of science.
Our team worked one-on-one with young learners, guiding them through two exciting, eco-friendly projects designed to teach fundamental scientific principles in a fun and accessible way.
1. Homemade Compost Bins: Turning Waste into Wonder
Each science kit included materials and step-by-step instructions for creating mini compost bins, empowering families to explore sustainability right at home. Using simple household items, participants learned how organic waste can be transformed into nutrient-rich compost through microbial decomposition—a natural process that reduces landfill waste and enriches soil.

- Brown waste (dry leaves, twigs, shredded paper) provides carbon, a key component for decomposition.

- Green waste (food scraps) supplies nitrogen, fueling the microbial activity.
- Soil introduces essential bacteria, while water and oxygen accelerate the breakdown process.

By layering these materials in a repurposed plastic bottle, families witnessed firsthand how nature recycles organic matter—reducing waste while cultivating a greener future.
2. Balloon-Powered Cars: A Lesson in Physics
Children also had a blast constructing balloon-powered cars from everyday materials like toothpicks, bottle caps, and balloons. This engaging activity demonstrated Newton’s Third Law of Motion—for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.
As air rushed out of the balloon, the car zoomed forward, illustrating how stored energy converts into motion. The laughter and excitement from young scientists as they raced their creations showcased the joy of hands-on learning.
